I'm using a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 with my 30D shooting my kid's football and baseball games. I am considering purchasing a Canon Tele 2X extender. Will this make a difference in getting in closer for a tighter shot from sidelines? Will there be any distortion? What's the difference between the EF 2X II and the EF 2X III? Thanks.
Forget using an extender on the 55-250, unless you don't mind to focus manually. Second, the 70-300 will give you better better results than a 55-250+extender. Third, I doubt if there are any extenders that fit EF-s lenses. Forget hand holding it, use a tripod. Also because this is a 2X extender, you're losing a LOT of light. With my Canon 300mm 2.8, with the 2.0 mk III I'm now shooting at aperture of f/5.6. You're also losing a LOT of autofocus speeds. Canon is saying as much as 75%, but it didn't feel that high.
First example is Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS plus Kenko Teleplus HD C-AF 2X DGX teleconverter. enko Teleplus HD C-AF 2X DGX teleconverter was attached. This photo was made hand held through a window from inside the house. F/11 is wide open for this combination of lens and teleconverter. The F6.3 listed is incorrect and two stops should be added.
(2) the Canon 70-200 2.8 II + Canon Extender EF 2X III Obviously, buying the extender would be a lot cheaper and lighter than carrying around another heavy zoom. The Tamron would give me a little more reach, albeit the reviews say it's quite soft above 500mm.Here is a link to some samples of mine using the Sigma 150-500mm Sport with the Canon 1.4x III converter on the R5. The autofocus with this combination works much better on the R5 than it does on my 5D IV or 7D II. Bob.
